There are plenty of simple copy/image tools that could do it (including 
dd, then some sort of partition jiggling with a partition mngr.

For ease of learning though I'd use Mondorescue - it is a backup tool 
with nice curses interface.  You can backup a hard drive to a CD/DVD set 
(which is made bootable) then put a new hard drive in, boot up from the 
disk, install on new drive (which can be larger).
