hi Daniel,

I'd use Debian Etch, ... If you install the minimal bootstrap version of
debian (debootstrap , around 100-300 megs), this comes with a running
console system, a full package management system, console utils - so you can
install apache with some simple apt commands and whatever else you want, as
long as you don't install anything graphical such as X it should keep the
size small, though there's nothing stopping you from installing the full X
and tools later on.  Use a good package management system it saves much time
(you could just as easily pimp this little box out with php,perl,python and
deck it out with rdbms's like mysql, postgresql, firebirdql, anymore? all as
easy as apt-get install <package name> ) ...
