Folks: A brief note to let you all know I have tasted success. By dint 
of tenacity, natural intelligence, head scratching of I managed to 
connect my Ubuntu to the internet via a dial up modem (and much more).

I shall post a longer note tomorrow giving details (blow by blow) of how 
success was achieved. In the mean time thanks to all who make an effort 
help.
