But does it only speak PTP?

is that the Powershot G6 worked with USB mass storage as well.  And that it 
worked with gtkam and Digikam, so there's another couple of options to check 
out. (Although I have a feeling that gtkam uses gphoto2).

Plug the camera in then "fdisk -l | grep sd"
Or "tail -f /var/log/messages" and then plug the camera in.

Alternatively, just upgrade libgphoto2 and gphoto2 instead of upgrading your 
whole distro.  The source code's on Sourceforge, there's a download link from 
www.gphoto.org, or some clever person could tell you how to do it with 
apt-get or something like that.
