[AuckLUG] Update problem resolved

Hi All,
Just a note to say "Thanks to everyone who responded to my Fedora
update problem and a couple of observations on my personal experience
with getting in to Linux.

For some reason , I think now dodgy CD's I had the greatest trouble
installing Fed 4 the first time round .In fact I would drag it out and
stuff the disk in the computer after each time MicroS had particularly
enraged me,(again) and it wasn't until the 4th or 5th time that it
actually caught and fired up.

Then ,the first thing that I found out was my Epson multifunction
printer/scanner absolutely refused to talk to Linux , despite
reassurances at various
Linux support sites all over the net that it would. The saga is recorded
here on LUG and at other spots all over the web.Despite a very kind and
experienced LUG member coming around to my place and spending till 3 a.m.
one morning we never did get it working.

This lead me to try Ubuntu ,Mepis ,Debian Sarge and Puppy ,none of which
talked to it either and none of which I liked as much as Fedora.

I could not come to terms with Ubuntu's no boot to root thing and from a
point of view of aesthetics I just like the look and the lay out of
Fedora/Gnome well above the others. However if one of the other distros
had worked that damned Epson I'd probably be using that distro right
now."What ever works" right ?.

I personally don't feel put off by having more experienced folk than me
suggest other distros that might serve me better , but I also can't see
why , if one is brave enough to dip ones toe in the Linux lake in the
first place they wouldn't then go on to a least have a bit of a tour of
what else is available in the field. surly common cat type curiosity
would cause most people to go see what all this Knoppix/Gentoo/freeBSB
thing is all about.

Even though I'd say I'm a pretty committed Fedorahead I still grab any
other distros that float by just to have a look ,and of course in the
vanishingly small chance that they might work that @#$%^&* scanner. :-)

Anyway thanks again all , keep cool and carry the flag (or the penguin)

Regards
Ron.
P.S. The original problem (remember that ) was caused by a weird quirk
in FC5 having to do with repos and /etc/yum.repo.d and repos that for
some reason work with FC4 but not FC5
