Fair enough, and I do understand your point. However both these people are talking about problems with upgrades breaking their distribution. I'm just letting them know that such problems have pretty much been solved by debian and all it's derivitive distros have inherited this. Also I really don't see why people shouldn't reccommend other solutions to people at this point. If I was helping a friend, who was new to linux, and he was having a rough time with slackware and getting frustrated by it's lack of package management... Then I wouldn't just tell him to persevere with it and show him how to fix the problems that cropped up. I think I do remember having to manually edit xorg.conf in the first version of Ubuntu to add in an option for 1280x1024 - Why they didn't include such a common resolution for 17" monitors in the first place is beyond me. Look, anyway, I'm basically with you. I hate reading these boring threads about why this distro is better than that distro. However in this situation I really do think that both their problems could be solved by switching to something that let them upgrade in an easier fashion. Maybe if the two people who are experiencing problems can let us know what they are then we could actually give more precise advice. Cheers Hansel On 9/28/06, Michael J.
