If I remember correctly a short while ago Mandrake Linux had some real
issues with LG drives didnt it?

Cant remember the exact details but they werent pretty :p

Lite-On drives are cheap as chips these days (Dunno about -RAM drives
thou) and they're pretty reliable :)
