OK so the child is 6 years old, and I personally would rather her keep her childhood for a little longer before being asked if she would like her penis enlarged or if she need viagra so she can "last longer" I really dont think she will care at that age if her e-mail is being censored, and clearly you dont have kids if you think you can "sit them down to have a chat" with a child of any age after the fact. Basically she has 4 contacts that would only need to contact her at this point, and yes when she is older, she can deal with the stuff that comes from the internet, but at that age, I think it is a little unnessasary for her to have to deal with it.. and if I want to censor what my child sees on TV or on the internet then I have that right - and if she pays for the internet and tv, then she is more than welcome to view anything she wants to on the net or on TV... Oh and yes, her IP address is restricted so she can only access set websites, and before an address is added we vet the site to ensure that it is approprate for a 6 year old to view.. something that I would consider any parent to do... after all is that what the whole "net safe" thing is about... Just so happens that I know more than most parents when it comes to computers, were generally its the kids that know more.. Plus, I would like to see her get around a fairly restricted network infrastructure, where DHCP will allocate routes depending on the MAC address and only set machines / MACS have full access and speed to the internet. > I'm left wondering how old these kids are. > > Are they home schooled and removed from society completely? > > Would a better approach be to set up an agent to copy all in and out > bound mail for the user to a second mail account for review? > > Then review the mail after the event, if you find anything unappropriate > then you sit down with the child and have a chat. > > Knowing that their mail isn't private will slow them down. > > However, is their desktop restricted to the point where they can't use > web mail systems, vpn, im and any number of other work a rounds? > > See: http://www.tcn.bowenvale.co.nz/content/view/25/20/ > > We spend some time each week talking about these types of issues. > > Cheers Don > > _______________________________________________ > AuckLUG mailing list > AuckLUG at linux.net.nz > http://www.linux.net.nz/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/aucklug >
