My first message on this listserv, so my apologies if I've failed to
adhere to some required protocol.

I might suggest you would find it easier to play with different distros
using something like one of VMWare's virtualisation technologies (Or Xen
if you can get that going) and run this machine instances under that. This
was how I ditched XP as my primary OS and I now run VMWare under Ubuntu
with XP, Mac OS and SLED virtual machines. Might save you some trouble in
future.
