*Greenie cap on* I'll just mention a small issue with the increased uptake in distributed computing, and that is, increased power usage. Admittedly you are referring to a server which will be running most/all of the time, however without something like this projects listed below, your CPU will be idling. And then there are the people who leave their PCs on just to participate in these projects, when they would otherwise turn them off at night. Donating processor time will (Obviously) increase the power usage of your CPU. This may only be a small amount, but unnecessary power usage is something that is increasing throughout the world, placing an increasing demand on a resource which at times can have quite a strain on supply, and will only get worse in future. So I'll ask you to think a little about your energy use when considering joining a distributed computing project. Admittedly you can do more by changing any incandescent light bulbs you have to compact fluros, but Im going to guess youve already done that, right? :-) *Greenie cap off* Cheers, Peter On Wed, October 18, 2006 6:49 pm, Rick wrote: > Greetings > > Having just set up my own webserver and blog at home, its time to > consider joining a voluntary BOINC team or similar to properly donate > all that unused cpu time, since I don't expect my blog to be an > international sensation. ;-) > > I've looked at WorldCommunityGrid, GridRepublic and the > BoincAccountManager, (BAM). > > So far BAM looks like the broadest church to join, with lots of projects > listed. > > Have I missed anybody? > Does the AuckLug have a team anywhere to which I could contribute/join? > Any evils to avoid? > > If AuckLug doesn't have a team going somewhere, would it be worthwhile > considering? > > If this discussion exists anywhere in the archives, a pointer would be > appreciated. > > many thanks > Rick Leckinger > _______________________________________________ > AuckLUG mailing list > AuckLUG at linux.net.nz > http://www.linux.net.nz/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/aucklug >
