I would recommend that you use SuSE's inbuilt online updater tool which is
a function within YaST. This tool is the safer bet if you are unused to the
ins and outs of Linux as it will sort out inter-dependencies and it will
get updates that are guaranteed to be compatible with your existing
SuSE 10.1 installation.
You will find YaST startup under the "System" menu selection. It will
require you to enter the root password (As you will be altering the system).
Once it starts select "Software" on the left panel and then "Online Update"
on the right. Don't be too worried if nothing much happens for a while.
Novell's recent changes to YaST have made it tiresomely slow.
Eventually you will get a menu which should show you all the
software updates that are relevant for your configuration.
If you get to this point and then get stuck I'm sure someone on this group
will be happy to take you thru the following steps to get your updates.
