Hi Alan

This time I am guessing. There is a disc test in the boot options to 
check the CD. You could also try it in another computer just as a live 
CD to see if it works on another computer. I have found a graphics card 
that worked on on version of Mandrake but not on the next, so trying 
another card may be worth while.
I had the same problem with both Ubuntu and Kubuntu, so it is 
interesting that Kubuntu works.

It looks like a good place to start.
