[AuckLUG] CAN'T GET A SCREEN IMAGE IN EDUBUNTU

I have successfully downloaded and burnt the ISOs for Kubuntu(for myself) and
Edubuntu(for my grandsons).

When I install Edubuntu I get a message:

 ACPI: Unable to locate RSDP

then I get the preliminary Edubuntu Splash screen shortly followed by a blank
screen. I can hear the CD drive working but eventually I get a message:

 Attention
 Out of Range
 H 255Khz V66.1Hz

I have tried loading Kubuntu on the same machine and, while I get the same
ACPI message, Kubuntu appears to load correctly and there is no problem with
viewing information on screen.

I took Edubuntu 6.10 CD to work and ran it on my PC there and it loaded fine
so I guess it is down to a combination of Edubuntu and my monitor/PC. Tried a
different monitor on my home PC and this time I got the "Black Screen of
Death" - can't see anything...not even the Out of Range message.

The monitor is an IBM 50/60hz E74 CRT and the PC a Compaq P2/266 with on
board video (no card).

I gather that I need to change the monitor settings (that should be a laugh
with my experience but I can try anyway)but I can't do anything with a blank
screen!

How do I get to see something (is there a "Safe Mode or something that I can
use)and when I do how do I change monitor settings when I get there.
