[AuckLUG] How to type Non English charactors in Mandriva?

ah. For Mandriva the compose key setting is under system, configuration, 
kde, accessibility, keyboard layout. After enabling it, now pressing the 
key I chose and then typing /o gives ø
with that clue, and a bit more research turns up that only in 
Thunderbird (rh)ctrl+(rh)shift+F8 does work toø.
I havn't yet found out how to do x^2 yet, but that is for another day. 
And installing a charactor map has given me another trick up my sleeve.
