Hello Mark

Bookmark this link as a pretty good first port of call:

http://doc.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/desktopguide/C/index.html

Navigate here to answer your windoze partition question:

http://doc.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/desktopguide/C/partitions-booting.html
(1/3 down the page)

I didn't discover a page for your screen resolution change, but under
Ubuntu, (Gnome), clicking System > Preferences > Screen Resolution does
the trick. What do you bet that there is something similar, only with a
friendly KDE type name, in the same place in Kubuntu? :-)

The Ubuntu/Kubuntu forums are also a pretty friendly place to dig up
answers to your questions.

Happy Trails!
