I created a gmail account yesterday, for a friend - it never asked me for a phone number or other 'real' ID. I didn't use an invite, and I used a hotmail account for the lost-password backup address. I think maybe they gave me preferential treatment because I was using a dvorak keyboard and typing real slow... :-) Karl. (BTW: I agree with providing as little info on the web as is reasonably possible. Furthermore, I am amused to discover that of all the lists I am on, doing a google search for my email address reveals that only nzlug carelessly shows my address on a public webpage - somewhat sloppy of someone, methinks)
