Auckland LUG Meeting - Monday 7 August 2006
Submitted by scott on 1 Aug 2006 - 7:48pm Auckland
Who:Peter Harrison (President of the NZOSS)
What:Silent Success

Many open source projects, especially in the Java arena, have gone under the radar. They are not as well known as Apache, Linux and OpenOffice, but they are providing the core technologies many companies now have deployed at the core of their businesses. Learn what some of these silent successes are, and how they are helping NZ software businesses.

Tomcat - the reference implementation of the Servlet and JSP specification.

Hibernate - Recently acquired by Red Hat as part of JBoss. Hibernate is a popular data persistence engine that grew out of dissatisfaction with heavy J2EE technology.

Postgresql - Seemingly always in the shadow of MySQL, Postgresql is a rock solid database being used in the financial and healthcare sectors.
