G'day everyone. In light of the recent announcement and changes made by WLUG I've sorta had a lightbulb go off in my head, so thought i'd jot these down as an FYI. Basically NZLUG as it exists at the moment, seems to work. Our mailing list is fairly popular and the website has some useful resources on it. Likewise the WLUG Wiki is effective. They've made the Wiki concept work well for them and have further invited contributions from across the board. Discussion on the list has indicated that NZLUG members also like the idea of a Wiki for sharing information. As such, and taking into account the last message from the WLUG, I've opted to simplify things: - The new 'NZ Linux Wiki' concept is endorsed. - The 'NZLUG Wiki' doesn't exist. This was what I first assumed the option of the NZLUG skin of the WLUG Wiki would be, but the assertion that it is infact the WLUG website is valid - hardly fair if we should try to claim ownership of something which another group has worked so hard on. - NZLUG has a website. Theres potential there and for our own purposes, it does the job. - NZLUG, when it comes down to it, is a mailing list and website as it stands. Beyond those things, we have no 'identity' - and personally I feel that its our Mailing list - being the foundation of our group - that provides our identity. Eg, our individual participants are what make us a Group of Linux Users in the first place. Thus - www.linux.net.nz - the NZLUG website - now links to the wiki.linux.net.nz hostname and introduces it as the 'NZ Linux Wiki hosted by, and built on, the Waikato Lug and its webserver.' Thats what it is. - NZLUG retains its key aspects of identity - the website and mailing list. - NZLUG endorses and encourages people to make use of the resources being made available to them, that includes the NZ Linux Wiki kindly being provided by Waikato LUG. - NZLUG remains a website and mailing list targetted at all New Zealanders, and will do the best it can to provide resources to NZLUG members and/or links to external resources/regional LUGs, in order to make life easier for all Kiwi Linux Fans. - NZLUG has no plans to change its organisational structure. We're unincorporated, and survive thanks to the voluntary efforts of some of its participants. We (The NZLUG Administrators) do however have liason with other organisations such as the NZOSS, and we're watching the developing ideas around 'Linux NZ' (or similar) with interest. We encourage other participants to do the same. Disclaimer: These opinions are mine personally of course, and don't represent Nic, Scott, or anyone else tied to NZLUG. And being a member of NZLUG doesn't mean you have to agree with me either. ;-) Mark. _______________________________________________ NZLUG mailing list NZLUG@linux.net.nz http://www.linux.net.nz/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/nzlug
