On the subject of laptops, I too have had innumerable problems with
major brands, but the one that I must recommend, as I have had no
problems related to linux with the 5 models I own, is Toshiba, i can
guarantee absolutely any linux to work perfectly on:
Satellite 2060CDS
Satellite 2650XDVD
Satellite 1700CDT
Satellite Pro 42xx/43xx/46xx
Satellite 30CDT

Of those, the two models I have not owned, but that are based on the
same system board as the SatPro 42xx are the SP43xx and 46xx...

Distributions tested: Gentoo, Knoppix, Gnoppix, Redhat, Mandrake, Debian.
