pass a "hdX=ide-scsi" to the kernel line in your grub.conf, where hdX is
your ide CD writer

ie. hda = Primary Master; hdb = Primary Slave hdc = Secondary Master,
and so on.

(assuming you are using grub... it is a similar alteration in lilo if
you are using that... Google will tell you the exact syntax...)
